What is a serial number of a laptop?

        A serial number of a laptop is a unique string of numbers and letters that the original maker assigns to a laptop i.e it is alphanumeric and no two laptops can have the same serial number. The length of characters differs from one laptop to the other.

How to identify or spot the serial number of a laptop?

        The serial number of a laptop can be located via different means but the two easiest means will be highlighted below. The two means are the Command Prompt method and Glancing Method.

The Command Prompt method involves the use of special commands to retrieve the serial number. It starts by pressing the windows button and R simultaneously and typing “cmd” in the search bar.

The serial number will surface immediately after the prompt.

The glancing method involves looking at some spot on the laptop or the product box which houses the laptop. Some notable spots on the laptop to search for serial numbers include the battery compartment, sticker at the bottom of the chassis, bar code etc. This method also involves looking at the content of the receipt, and email (if it is purchased online. In this case, the serial number is denoted with “S/N”.
